A milestone of a lifetime,
marked with the family

LONGEVITY CELEBRATION
ABOUT LONGEVITY

What is a long-life celebration?

Kanreki, koki, kiju, beiju

A Japanese tradition that celebrates reaching one of the great ages of a life. Family and close friends gather to give thanks for health and for long life.

Each of these ages has its own name — kanreki, koki, kiju and so on. They were originally counted by the old kazoedoshi reckoning, though today most people go by the actual age.

A long-life celebration held at a ryotei

Around a proper kaiseki course worthy of the occasion, with family and close friends, you can take your time over a milestone of a lifetime and give thanks for health and long life.

Tatami rooms in which an older guest can settle comfortably, and quiet private rooms. Red and other tokens of good fortune give the milestone its colour.

The whole family can have their photograph taken as well, so the day is left in a form you can keep.

Long-life celebrations at a glance

LONGEVITY MILESTONES
Age Name Colour Where it comes from
60 Kanreki Red These days it reads less as long life than as a milestone such as retirement, and a present in red is now more usual than the red chanchanko itself.
70 Koki Purple From a line by Du Fu, the Tang poet: few have reached seventy since ancient times. These days this is often taken as the first real long-life celebration. The colour is purple.
77 Kiju Purple The cursive form of 喜, written out as 㐂, can be read as seventy-seven. The colour is purple.
80 Sanju Yellow Also called yasoju. Take the abbreviated 傘, written 仐, apart and it gives eighty. The colour is yellow.
88 Beiju Yellow Take 米 apart and it gives eighty-eight. The colour is yellow.
90 Sotsuju White The abbreviated 卒, written 卆, reads as ninety. The colour is white.
99 Hakuju White Take 一 from 百 and 白 is left. The colour is white.
100 Hyakuju White Also called kiju, from the 紀 of "century". The colour is white.

ADD-ON

Add our mizutaki

¥5,500/per guest (tax incl.)

Why not share our mizutaki, the dish Jisaku has been loved for since it opened, at the celebration table as well?

"If more than one person makes it, the taste changes" — so it is entrusted to a single cook, and it became the dish the house is known for. Chicken and water, nothing else. The technique was worked out to draw the bird's own quality forward, and it uses the whole chicken, head to feet, with nothing wasted.

Mizutaki (Awa-odori chicken), onion, house ponzu, momiji-oroshi, spring onion
