Ninety-five years behind it:
an entrance of light and sound, “Sumiike”
In 2026 Tsukiji Jisaku reaches its ninety-fifth year.
We are here because people came to this place, and kept coming, year after year.
Our founder, Jisaku Honda, was a man who delighted people through the culture of food and held to a Japanese sense of beauty.
Carrying that on, we work at the taste of course, but also at the room, and at every gesture within it.
Out of those ninety-five accumulated years comes a new form of hospitality: “Sumiike”, a second Jisaku pond made of light and sound.
Guests are met by a scene that shifts as the hours pass.
Colour and sound change with the season and the time of day,
opening onto an elegant hour at Tsukiji Jisaku —
Holding both the steps of those who have supported us and the time of those we have yet to meet,
Tsukiji Jisaku walks on into its next era.
Pass through the gate of Tsukiji Jisaku and a quiet presence of light and sound gathers softly around you.
The garden — its surface catching the light, its hundred and fifty koi turning through the water — bleeds faintly into the entrance hall.
Layers of sound shift with time and open pauses in the space; light appears as traces that suggest the movement of the pond and the passing of the carp, changing in answer to the people who move through it.
As the hour turns, the space takes on new expressions, and the border between the real and the imagined rises faintly into view.
This is both the way into somewhere other than the everyday and the way back out to it, and what rises here makes a single evening particular.
“Sumiike” casts, through light and sound, the time Tsukiji Jisaku has spun so far and the shape of what it will attempt next.

Can I see it without a reservation for a meal?
The installation is for guests of Tsukiji Jisaku only.
Is there a charge to see the entrance installation?
It is free, and for guests of Tsukiji Jisaku only.
Viewing follows our opening hours, and varies with the time of day, the season and the weather.
*During lunch service the installation is sound only.
Is “Sumiike” running for a limited period?
It is scheduled to run until 31 December 2027.
Can rain or other weather prevent it from running?
We may pause or stop the installation for our own operational reasons.
We may also stop or pause it in severe weather, if we judge that safety cannot be assured.
May I take photographs or video, and post them on social media?
Photography, video and posting to social media are all permitted.
We ask that you observe the following.
・Please do not use flash
・No monopods, tripods, selfie sticks or other supports over 30 cm, and no drone filming
・No commercial filming or press coverage without prior consent (please apply through the press enquiry form)
・Nothing else that would disturb other guests
Can it be used for wedding photography?

Can the entrance alone be reserved exclusively?
