What is Osechi cuisine? Why enjoy Osechi with your family?
Osechi ryori is a traditional food prepared to welcome the New Year and pray for a bountiful harvest, safety in the home, and prosperity for descendants. It is also believed to serve as a preserved food to entertain the gods before cooking on the third day of the New Year.
black soy bean
Black beans are seasoned sweetly and have the meaning of "to work hard" or "to work energetically." The color black is also believed to ward off evil spirits and is used to wish for good health and to ward off bad luck.
herring roe
The many eggs lined up in a row signify "many children" and "prosperity of offspring. The word "herring" is also associated with "herring = two parents," and is used to pray for the health and longevity of both parents.
(processed) fish paste
Kamaboko has a light flavor and is a perfect chopstick snack. The shape of the half-moon is said to resemble the "first sunrise" on New Year's Day, and the red and white colors represent "happiness" and "protection from evil," while the white color represents "holiness" and "purity.
Shrimp
The prawn's long beard and bent waist are a prayer for long life, saying "the more your waist is bent, the longer you will live".
Tai (sea bream)
Sea bream is linked to the belief in the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, as it is the fish held by Ebisu-sama, the god of good fortune, and is a fish that is associated with "mezutai," or good luck. Because of its red color and beautiful shape, it is used for celebratory occasions.
