This year, 2025, that date falls on Monday, October 6.

The "Mid-Autumn Moon" originated from the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and spread to Japan during the Heian period (794-1185) as part of the aristocrats' moon-viewing culture, and eventually took root among the general public as an event to celebrate the autumn harvest.

The custom is to pile up about 15 tsukimi dango (moon-viewing dumplings) to look like a full moon, decorate them with silver grass to ward off evil spirits and pray for a good harvest, and offer taro, chestnuts, and other autumn harvest items as an expression of gratitude and wishes while enjoying the beautiful moon and the changing of the seasons.
